Lionel Messi and his father Jorge Messi have both been sentenced to 21 months in jail for defrauding Spain of millions of dollars between 2007 and 2009. However, it is expected that both will not have to serve jail time.
According to an article from BBC, prison terms under 2 years can be served on probation in Spain. Officials have also come out saying that Messi has received enough punishment playing for the Argentina national team. In an interview, an official said "because Messi and the Argentinian national team have been such disappointment to the country and to the world, we have decided that he has already received enough punishment as it is." There is a good chance that his sentence and probation could be lessened because of the pain and agony that Messi has suffered playing for the team. The national team is coming off of a Copa America final loss to Chile in June. After losing in penalty kicks, Messi announced that he would be retiring from the national team for good. This is the 4th major final loss for the team in the last 9 years. The other losses include a 2015 Copa America loss to Chile, the 2014 World Cup Final loss to Germany, and the 2007 Copa America Final loss to Brazil. What is ironic is the major success that Messi has had away from the National Team. He was won the UEFA Champions League title with Barcelona 4 times, the La Liga Spanish championship 8 times, and the Ballon d'Or 5 times.
I think Messi should choose to serve his time in jail. It is obvious that he lacks the clutch gene and cannot win anything for his country. It would be a good PR move to serve the jail time to make himself look good and he would not have to play for the national team either. By the way the national team has been playing, it doesn't look like they will be winning any tournaments in the near future. All in all this seems like a very Messi situation. At least Messi will have another statistic that Ronaldo does not. Jail sentences: Messi-1 Ronaldo-0.
